In Oklahoma, if you’re under 18, you must obtain a learner’s permit before you may apply for a probationary license. (Your parent or guardian must sign a consent form.) If you are younger than 16, you must also be enrolled in a driver’s education course. At age 16 or older, you must pass a vision test and a written (permit) test on driving theory to become eligible for a permit. You must take the written test at a SOK Driver Testing Facility, not online.
If you’re at least 18 years old, you still have to pass the vision test and the written (permit) test (as well as a road test) for a license. However, driver’s education and a learner’s permit are optional. You may take the drive (road) test immediately after passing the written test if you feel ready for it. If not, consider obtaining a learner’s permit for more supervised driving practice.
All questions on the official written test are based on the official Oklahoma SOK driver’s 2025 handbook (Oklahoma SOK Handbook (OK Driver's Manual) 2025). For your convenience, we have made this official manual available (in PDF format) for easy download from this webpage.
Unfortunately, in Oklahoma, 40 – 50% of applicants typically fail the official written test on their first attempt. Our test preparation program will keep that from happening to you. It includes a graduated series of practice tests accompanied by our AI assistant. It can give you hints and explanations and answer your questions to help you learn driving theory. We guarantee our program will get you to pass!
We have also created an audiobook of the official driver’s handbook. It’s formatted as a series of MP3 files, one for each chapter of the manual: how to apply for your license, your driver license, requirements for drivers, and so on. You can download each chapter file individually. The longest file is Chapter 1: How to Apply for Your Oklahoma Driver’s License, whose running time is 30 minutes and 2 seconds. The audiobook has a total running time of 2 hours, 53 minutes, and 53 seconds, so you should be able to go through it in a few days.
Finally, let’s not risk something going wrong shortly before or during the written permit test. That’s why we created our own permit test study guide to supplement the official state manual. It provides useful last-minute tips on how to prepare yourself mentally and physically for the test, which documents you must take with you, what fees you may have to pay, and which test questions are most often missed.
